I Didn't Know!

The old adage "What you don't know can hurt you" still holds true today. The question was posed, "does your school have an acceptable use policy (AUP) within the school district?" and I responded with, "I did not know."

Through conversation with coworkers I have discovered various websites that cannot be accessed because of the lack of appropriateness, or lack of privacy. Students often complain about the limitations that are on the school district web sites. A large majority of our students know more about technology apps than most adults. As a result, they are aware of more websites that would be advantageous for classroom use. Or so they think. But as we all know they aren't aware of, nor do they care about the risks that come with surfing unsafe and unproven websites available.
With this in mind it has become necessary to establish "Do's and Don'ts" within the school districts.
I understand the importance of protecting our students and teachers from unwanted chunk that is so prevalent within the technology websites. Hence, the questioned that was posed to me regarding AUP within our district is no longer "I don't know."

Acceptable Use Policy for the
Council Bluffs Community School District.

"All use of School District computers, computer networks, and the Internet, and any communications thereby should not be considered by employees to be private."

"Appropriate Use of Computers, Computer Network and the Internet –Employees
there are 14 specific rules regulations and expectations under this title."

This is why I choose to use technology the least amount possible. Yes, I realize all the rules and regulations have been set up for the good of all people. Therefore, it is essential that all participants know and understand all guidelines.

The Stuff
"Computers and access to computer networks or the Internet
which are provided by the school district are the property of the
school district and shall be used only for lawful purposes."
Such systems are not confidential, and employees have
no expectation of privacy in any materials therein.”

The Students
“The District has the right to place restrictions on use to ensure
that use of the system is in accord with its educational purpose.

Users have no privacy expectations in the
contents of their personal files and records of their
online activity while on the District system.”

In conclusion, the staff and students need to know and understand the do's and don'ts for appropriate use of technology. I believe it would be beneficial for all students to engage in a fun hands-on class workshop. This would help staff and students become highly familiarized with all expectations.

Both AUP's available to students and staff are in written form, and in my opinion are accurate and appropriate. I believe the technology team has done a thorough job providing the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)for our school district.
