Week 2

Sorry for the rocky start with access to the blog and apparently losing a few blog posts that were done on Wednesday and Thursday. I hope they will be restored in the near future. If your blog post was "lost" please send me a quick email and I will make sure to update the grade book accordingly.

I will finish sending feedback on your blog posts, comments, and weekly paper by tomorrow evening.  You can also double check your grade throughout the eight weeks on blackboard.  Please send your weekly paper through email (not blackboard) as I've found managing feedback through email much easier.

This week's assignments are now posted on blackboard and on the assignments link.  We will be exploring the course goal of understanding and using Web 2.0 technologies.  Once you know what you would like to cover for your blog post please post it as a comment to this post so we can avoid duplicates. More than one student can do each suggested topic - just make sure to cover a different subject - except for suggested topic #4 - that's first come, first serve.

I hope everyone is a bit more comfortable using the course blog.  If you should have any questions or concerns please contact me via email. It was nice getting to know each of you this past week!

  1. This week I will work on researching question #3 delving into Wikipedia's site. I had no idea what Web 2.0 was until I looked it up online and I am still a bit hazy. With a LOT more reading and researching I will have a better understanding by the time I post.

  2. This is my third attempt at posting this comment. The filter at school was down so that I could access the blog from school-a real coup! But unfortunately It wouldn't let me post. I have returned home and hopefully, I will have more success. I am going to look into the DARPA contest. It looks like it was fun!

  4. I believe I will choose topic number 2. It seems to be rather controversial. Sounds like fun.

  5. I would like to call "dibs" on Topic 3 regarding Facebook. As I am an avid Facebook user, I should probably get to know this technology better.

  7. I will be answering Question #2

According to our school districts policy in relation to accessing Web 2.0 content is that all district or building web sites shall have a staff member who shall monitor and be responsible for approving the content of the information, which is accessible on each web site. The content of the information shall be in compliance with the Millard Public Schools policy/rules including, but not limited to, the rules for Journalism: Prohibited Expressions (6605.1) and Internet Safety Filtering (7310.1). From what I understand our district blocks out much of the web 2.0 content, the only website that students can access is YouTube, and even than it must be accessed with direct teacher supervision. After speaking with our schools tech person he further went into detail why the district has chosen to block out such websites like, face book and twitter. Biggest reason which came as a surprise to me was the available bandwidth and that access to the sites had to be restricted because computers were freezing up in classrooms. Another reason was that many administrators felt that the content of such websites were inappropriate and should fall under the internet safety filtering. This does make sense considering the content of what can be found on these pages, some of it can be flagged as inappropriate other content just might not be education based. I think the district’s policy is correct; access to social networking websites should be restricted because of just simple productivity and speed. Inappropriate material should not be seen in school (or anywhere for that matter) but access to some Web 2.0 content should be allowed as long as it is under the direct supervision of a teacher or administrator.

  8. Hi Tyler - please do your response as a separate blog post - not as a comment. If you could add appropriate multimedia and links that could make your post more engaging.
