Take Learning on an Adventure!!

I explored the website http://www.discoveryeducation.com/ . The website is geared towards educators, parents, and students. Teachers can find printable lesson plans for K-12 grades in various subject areas such as math, science, language arts, and technology. There is a place for teachers to create all types of puzzles and learning adventures that help facilitate learning beyond the textbooks. The science section leads to opportunities for teachers to provide additional informational videos and virtual labs where students can go through the process of conducting an experiment.

Parents and students can access this website to get homework help, Webmath, and featured programs where the families can learn something together. For example, they have Explore the Blue program where families can build a boat or an aquarium. It goes in depth on the process of making a boat and vocabulary words to focus on. Parents can access additional resources such as motivation strategies and the PTA toolkit sections.

Looking at various activities in particular subject areas I see that most activities focus on more than one subject area. One of the lesson plans was titled Transatlantic Transitions. As students watched the informative video on the U.S. submarine, they were asked to listen for transitional words.

This website has a wealth of information for all learners. I even see opportunities where I can gather material to provide rich lesson plans to my preschoolers. There are activities that deal with pre-writing and reading activities. Some of the science experiments are basic enough that children learn skills like observing and commenting on effects. They may not grasp the concepts behind the outcomes of the experiments, but it all helps to build those neurons that will only grow as future teachers expand on them.

  1. Michelle,

I immediately went to the discoveryeducation website you wrote about in your post. I have been struggling with incorporating engaging, thought provoking, and interactive science lessons. The site is amazing. Of course I have already bookmarked several lessons to use and once I get my SmartBoard up and running I can see a lot more benefits. There is so much more to look at on this website. Thanks for posting.

  2. First of all, thank you for helping me work through this first crazy experience with blogging! It's nice to know we have all had the chance to work with each other and offer help when needed. I also looked at your website and really think this is a neat resource. The website seems to offer just about something for everyone. This is one of the things that I am going to love about blogging, sharing resources! I enjoy using web sites in my classroom for webquests, I can send you an example or if you google webquests you will also see some neat examples for a variety of age groups.
